Point Park Sports…..Really?

DO NOT RIP APART SOMETHING YOU HAVE NEVER WORKED WITH OR FOR.

So, The Globe always rips apart Point Park Athletics. Yeah, we do not have thousands of people attend basketball games and support the green and gold on a daily basis. Everybody knows it is not as big as theater at Point Park, but why shouldn’t be? and After Further Review, many of the people you see everyday bust their asses off to make sports at Point Park a crucial part of their lives, and hopefully yours.

Tennessee University has an enrollment of close to 28,000, and sports is obviously huge in the south. What else do they have to do? But, speaking with a friend who is a journalism major at Tennessee, they do not have the accessibility to create their own “Sportscenter”, which we do with Pioneer Sideline. This is a student run show for 4 years, all which have been successful. From Steeler players, to Bob Pomp, and internet celebrities, Sideline is a reason why you should care about sports. People bust their asses off to cover games, to record them, edit the highlights, and give you weekly presentations of what is going on in the sports world at PPU. When thinking about my freshman year, with Labar and myself starting this show, I wish we did more with it. There is always room for improvement, but seriously, look at this show and realize how much work is put into it. It is a 24/7 job for Josh Frketic, among others. Do I wish I could still do more for the show? Absolutely. But this guy throws all of the free time( which isn’t much free time to begin with) into this show and tries to get people to care about sports at PPU. Just because the attendance is not there in large increments, does NOT mean people do not care. I invested 4 years in making myself apart of sports at PPU, and now I can see why people care. They do not get paid for it, they do it for love, for committment, and for the desire to become better. PPU Sports may never have a huge following, but with a school of over 1,500 commuters and a total just above 3,000, what else can you ask for than trying?

Josh Frketic, in my opinion, works harder than anyone else on this campus. Pioneer Sideline is more of his life than breathing at times. I am not here to kiss his ass, because we have had differences on ideas, etc in the past, but friendships and arguments aside, show me somebody who puts every single drop of sweat and time into a project more than him. Don’t judge a whole sports program on the fact of attendance.

Sports is more than the game, it’s how people live. Broadcasters, Analysts, Media, Coaches, and Players invest days, weeks, and years into something that they can care for, work for, and strive for. Point Park Sports really is something to care about and to work for. There is a sports program here, and just because OTHER people do not invest time into it, does not mean it doesn’t exist.

First off, After Further Review never made these claims about point Park sports. Not exactly sure why a radio show is being accused of things that were said in a print journalism column.

Secondly, if the article was read a little more clearly, the author of this poorly written critique would have seen that the article never said anything negative to the coverage of Point Park Athletics by Point Park students (such as Pioneer Sideline). That is another claim I am having trouble to find the basis of.

Next, I am curious when, at any point, Josh Frketic’s name was mentioned in the article, or even on AFR for that matter. I’m almost positive it never has been. Since his name was never mentioned, it makes it seem a little like ass-kissing to me. I respect all of the people who put time into covrering PPU Athletics. At no point in the colum I assume you are talking about was there any criticism of PPU Athletics coverage by broadcast students.

I think that this blogger must have not read or skimmed over this segment of the column:
“I am not bashing the athletes or programs themselves, but really just the school in general, who does nothing to show support for these teams…”

By that, the article meant the school itself, not the students. There is no support by the school for athletics. By the student-run media groups, absolutely, and it is very well done. But to accuse an entire paper and a radio show of saying something that they have never said seems a little asinine.

Seriously though, I think what you guys do at Pioneer Sideline is awesome. In no way was I bashing you guys at all. I appologize though if there was confusion in the way the article was written and edited. Keep up the solid work.

First off, It was never said your show made these comments. It was simply a “play on words”…. for example, you could say I havent heard about Pitt basketball because i wasnt “in the berg”. I didnt mean it to say your radio show said these comments.

No need to be offended. Since you write for the Globe, you know about criticism, and knowing that it not personal. The quote you said ” why doesnt anyone care about Point Park University Athletics?”

This is contradicting your comment on here, saying the student run media groups do. Anyone to me means “anyone.”

Also, if you specifically mean the school, what makes our school? The students, faculty, and what they are involved in make a school. By saying there is no support by the school means that it is not recognized anywhere. False, because our students are apart of the school. If you meant “higher ups” such as administrative figures, that needed to be explained.

Also, the Pioneers went to the NAIA DIV 2 National Championship my freshman year, and i believe your a senior currently? that happened in 2006-2007. I could be wrong here, but they went my freshman year.

What the school does is give people an opportunity to publicize and discuss the universities athletics. Websites, banners, television shows, flyers, etc. are all examples of what the school is doing to help raise awareness for the athletic program. And the last part of your article, says “at least i was forced to see a couple of plays.” I implied this as sarcasm toward Pioneer Sideline, and that is belittling how much work is put into it.

Kissing ass is not what I was doing at all with Josh Frketic, he is the sports director for a reason. He puts more work into PPU Athletics than anyone else on this campus. Its just stating facts, not kissing ass.

Again, Josh, I am not here to personally take a shot at you in any way. If anyone wrote this, i wrote my opinion on here, much like you did in The Globe. That’s all. Take care and Im sure we can discuss this on one of our shows! Make it interesting radio!

The line “at least I was forced to see a couple of plays” was directed at the school for making me go and see plays at the Playhouse and had nothing to do with Pioneer Sideline whatsoever. So that’s cleared up.

Being in media yourself, you should know that sometimes people say the words “no one” or “nobody” in reference to the majority, and not necessarily meant to be taken so literally. The column is an opinion column, which means I have room to exadurate.

Sure, the school gives us chances to cover sporting events, but what do they actually do to support athletics? Have they held events in which they, for instance, give away free t-shirts or towels to the students who attend or make certain games a really big deal in which they publicize the game and offer shuttles to that game? Not that I have heard of in my four years…

Sure, occasionally they will throw a little blurb about a free shuttle service to a game on a Saturday into an email, but normally it is so far down that the majority of people probably do not even read it.

This was the intent for the article, to show people that the school itself, more importantly those in charge, and even the majority of the students do not care about athletics.

Again though, I appologize for the confusion and assure you guys that no offense at all was meant to student-run media in any way.
