What happened during the 31st Rock-A-Thon?
In case you missed it, here’s a small recap of the highlights during the 67 hours of Pure College Radio Insanity:
• Kevin and Andy (our Last DJ Standing competitors) went from totally pumped to totally pissed off to totally “I don’t care” to totally passed out.

• Getting hit by a Nerf Dart became as common as blinking.

• Arguments were settled with foam noodle duels.

• Whipped cream stains were left on the walls for days

• Professional Air Guitarists were born

•The Rock-A-Thon (yeeeaaaah!) theme song became scarred in our brains. Permanently.

• Andy enjoyed a fancy date with Wayne

• Aramark didn’t complain about us being too loud because it, quote “ looked like [we] were having too much fun”

Oh and we raised over $400 for The Early Learning Institute! Thank you everyone for your continued support throughout the years during this annual fundraiser!

The 31st Annual WPPJ Rock-A-Thon Presents:

“Win a Date with Wayne”

Ladies, you can win the chance to go see the hit Broadway comedy “Defending The Caveman” with WPPJ’s most eligible bachelor, Wayne Weil from the WPPJ Morning Show, this Wednesday, October 26, 2011!

Here’s how it works:

During Rock-A-Thon, we’ll be holding speed-dating sessions with Wayne in the second floor hallway of Lawrence Hall (outside Point Café) from 4 until 5 p.m. You have about 2- 3 minutes to have get-to-know-you, first-date style conversation with Wayne at our table which will be set up to simulate a romantic restaurant. While this is going on, Kevin Calhoun, WPPJ’s sports director, will be providing play-by-play commentary on the speed-dates, which will be televised on U-View.

If your speed-date is the best one of the hour, you get to go with Wayne that night to go see the comedic Broadway play “Defending The Caveman” at the Pittsburgh CLO Theatre at 7:30!

The winner will be announced at 5 p.m. You’ll have an hour or so to go get into the proper attire – we are attending a Broadway play, after all. If you want to save time and have a better chance to win, come to the speed-date already dressed up. You’ll meet up with Wayne back in Lawrence Hall at 6:30 to leave for the play. The CLO is in the Cultural District, just a short walk up Wood Street. You have no obligation other than to accompany Wayne and enjoy the play. Wayne is offering to buy you dinner after the show, if you are inclined to stick around for that as well.

To participate, we suggest you pre-register at wppjradio.com, but walk-ins are welcome, too! We ask for an entrance fee of $2, which will be donated to the Early Learning Institute, an organization that helps with the education of young children who have mental and/or physically disabilities. Also, Wayne will personally match all of the $2 entrance fees!

You get to help disabled kids, see an exclusive hit Broadway show, and have dinner with the witty, charming and handsome man-of-the-world Wayne Weil, who is also a recognized radio personality! All for two dollars! This is a worthwhile event that is too good to miss!

Pioneer Community Day

Pittsburgh – United Student Government of Point Park University will be hosting the first Pioneer Community Day, a University-wide day of community service, on Saturday, April 9. The day will begin with a kickoff breakfast before groups head out to their various projects, followed by a closing celebration and fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The goal of Pioneer Community Day is to develop a sense of unity and pride throughout the University and to give back to the surrounding downtown Pittsburgh area. Students, administrative departments, schools, athletic teams, student organizations, offices, and alumni are invited to gather and participate in this monumental event.

“We’re really excited about the opportunity to begin a tradition,” said USG President Michael Potoczny. “It’s a really great way to build the Point Park community and give back to the downtown area.”

The opening breakfast will begin at 10 a.m. in the lobby of Lawrence Hall. Participants will be able to gather, pick up their t-shirts, and enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast sponsored by Aramark before heading out to their various projects.

Projects will occur between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at various non-profit organizations throughout the Pittsburgh area. These organizations include (but are not limited to) Habitat for Humanity, The Early Learning Institute, Meadowcrest Nursing Home and the Humane Society.

From 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Bess Rogers will be performing a live concert in the Lawrence Hall Ballroom. The concert is free, however charitable donations will be collected at the event.

Dance for Dreams, a dance-a-thon style event, will be held as a fundraiser for Make A Wish Foundation at 8 p.m. in the Student Center. Campus Activities Board, WPPJ, Community Service Club, Black Student Union, and Dance Club are all working together to sponsor this portion of Pioneer Community Day.

WPPJ, Dance Club, CAB, The Black Student Union, and Community service club will be hosting “The Pioneer Day Dance for Dreams” on Saturday April 9th at 8:00 PM in the gym on the fifth floor of the student center. The event is meant to be the final event for Pioneer Day and will be open to all students on campus. Students will be encouraged to enter the competition by raising a certain amount of money. From there the students will dance all night long to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The “Dance for Dreams” is not only open to the contestants however. All students are also encouraged to come cheer their friends and dance right alongside the competitors.
Once again this year WPPJ was recognized by the Inter-collegiate Broadcasting System (IBS). Ten WPPJ students and myself attended the 71st IBS National Conference in NYC last week. At the awards presentation last Saturday, WPPJ came up the winner in two categories — “Best Station Event” for its Early Learning Institute Rock-a-Thon and “Best Podcast” for the “Lost & Forgotten” program produced by Kelsey Kahla and Nick Sperdute.

Plus WPPJ staffers earned four Finalist/’Honorable Mention’ certificates: “Best Specialty Music Show” for Nick Sperdute, “Best News Feature” for Anthony Costulas, “Best On-Air Personality” for Nate Zerambo and also “Best Station Event Promo” for Val Palmieri and Nate Zerambo. While each award was a thrill — the “Rock-a-Thon” award was easily the most emotional and satisfying to all of us, and a fitting tribute to the very special staff and students of the Early Learning Institute itself.

And, to top it off, WPPJ was one of only three stations awarded the IBS “Gold” standard for its overall operation, based upon a Bronze-Silver-Gold-Platinum ranking. Just two stations earned “Platinum” status.

IBS is a national college radio station organization made up of some 200 member radio stations from nearly every state in the US. Just over 800 student broadcasters attended last week’s conference.

If you have any of these students in classes or see them in the halls in the next few days, please give them a little congratulatory word or gesture. Appreciate the teaching, the encouragement, support and nurturing from all of you especially to those students of our who are as creative, dedicated, focused and passionate as these students are.
