Val’s Velocity: Radio Grows With Advertising

Advertising revenue is on a heavy up slope this quarter, increasing 2% from September 2011. It has actually been growing continuously for the past seven quarters. Which area of broadcast saw the most growth in advertising? On-air radio spots.

Compared to last year, more advertisers are buying ads on radio stations during all hours, that is, they are purchasing any spots that are available. With an increased amount of commercial radio spots airing throughout the day, advertisers are reaching a heightened amount of listeners, compared to previous years.

While this is good news for radio stations financially, I have to wonder how the listeners feel about the increase in the amount of ad spots that play on-air. I imagine that a clutter of audio ads might take away from listener’s experience, because no one wants to hear an excessive amount of ad spots all day. However, radio is still a business and I understand the practice – a drive for money keeps it all running smoothly.
