Fort Wilson Riot, the Minnesotan duo has created some new ripples in the indie world recently. Opening for the band, Cloud Cult, Jacob Mullis and Amy Hager have perfected the art of the live performance. Walking into their set on Tuesday at Mr. Smalls Theatre set the mood for the entire night, it made the audience actually excited to be there and it finally made me a believer in opening bands. With only a guitar and a keyboard (which substituted with many different beats and instruments), the vibe itself felt like they were playing to a million people. Jacob (who has an afro that rivals Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez’s) sings the lead vocals and his voice reminds me of the classic indie rock voice, but the once factor that makes this band greater than most is Amy’s voice. She sounds like Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s protégé, her higher-pitched screaming but singing beautifully makes the duo’s power rock different and excitable. Fort Wilson Riot’s album, Predator/Prey was released in the summer to critical reviews, but this band still deserves much more credit. They are breaking the current indie trend of surfer rock by protesting and coming out with music that quickly changes tempos and sounds, and listeners will not be disappointed. If you’re sick of the unfortunate lack of good new music, quickly grab Fort Wilson Riot’s album and I promise that you’ll be rocking out to it soon enough.
